In his second solo exhibition at Upfor, Rodrigo Valenzuela uses staged photography to abstract and adapt images of barricades – in particular, simple physical structures built as a form of civil disobedience in times of oppression. This body of work draws on the artist’s longtime interest in poetic resistance and research in Chile, Ukraine, Venezuela and other countries. Often rooted in the contradictory traditions of documentary and fiction, his work frequently involves narratives around immigration and the working class. Valenzuela, formerly based in Seattle and Houston, was recently appointed to the art department at the University of California, Los Angeles.
