Put on by In a Landscape
In a Landscape: Classical Music in the Wild is an outdoor concert series in stunning landscapes of the Pacific Northwest. The series brings a 9-foot Steinway grand piano to the middle of forests, fields, calderas and historical sites for classical music concerts.
To meet the acoustical challenges of performing in the wild, music is transmitted to the concert-goers via wireless headphones. No longer confined to seats, they can explore the landscape, wander through secret glens, lie in sunny meadows, and roam old growth forests.
The Shire is a private 75-acre waterfront site in the heart of the Columbia River Gorge, directly across from Multnomah Falls. It is a carefully designed landscape with a sculpted lawn, a series of meadows, wetlands, vista points, river bays, and walking paths, which Portland architect John Yeon created over a 25-year period. He purchased the property in 1965 to protect it from possible industrial development, and donated the property to the University after Yeon’s death in 1994.
In addition, guests with paid tickets are invited to register for a free pre-concert walking tour of the Shire with John Yeon experts Randy Gragg and Nate Overmeyer. A separate ticket is required for this tour.
