Photography is an evolving medium, with many histories still to be explored. By The Book: 9 Designers is one such foray, examining photographic books as a marker within the photographic canon, and the role of designer within a traditional team including editors, photographers, printers and publishers engaged in a book’s creation.
Designers who began working on photography books during the 1970s to the early 2000s came before, or in the midst of, changing digital technologies including desktop publishing and the rise of common use of the Internet. At that same time, expanded awareness of photography as an artform led to an increase in both exhibitions and publications within the field. As a result, this relatively small pool of individuals has played a major role in the contemporary history of photography through the seminal volumes they were a part of producing.
The exhibition will include approximately ten titles selected by each designer from their own career, along with notes as to why each made those selections.
